Technically the work is an oil painting on canvas with use of smooth and heavy brush work, palette knife textures and under layers of gold leaf. Conceptually, there are superimposed layers of fragments of towns on the Mediterranean coast, especially from Italy- Ravello, Pozitano, Venice. The viewer is looking from above, which allows deeper observation of the landscape. Everything is veiled now from the light of the morning with the sunrise, to the daylight in that new imaginary landscape. There is not an obvious horizon line, which allows the viewer to experience a smooth transition from the light of the sky to the light on the sea. I used a discovery of Leonardo’s called “Sfomatto”.

There are areas with strong contrast of earthy tones—ochre, gold ochre, burgundy, umber, and sienna to ground the painting and emphasize the light of the dawn. Those areas appear from the background to the foreground in different scale, moving the space of the painting forth and back.
